Dr. Erica Hannickel, author, environmental history professor at Northland College in Ashland, and owner of 150+ orchids knows her orchids! She captivated the Door Garden Club Tuesday with her 'Of Empresses and Orchids' talk and images at the Donald and Carol Kress Pavilion in Egg Harbor, and offered tips for orchid plant care. Her newly released book, "Orchid Obsession: A History of Obsession in Fifteen Flowers", has been Short Listed for the 2023 Wisconsin Library Association nonfiction award.
Norton Books describes her latest book saying, "The epitome of floral beauty, orchids have long fostered works of art, tales of adventure, and scientific discovery. Tenacious plant hunters have traversed continents to collect rare specimens; naturalists and shoguns have marveled at orchids’ seductive architecture; royalty and the smart set have adorned themselves with their allure. In Orchid Muse, historian and home grower Erica Hannickel gathers these bold tales of the orchid-smitten throughout history, while providing tips on cultivating the extraordinary flowers she features."
