'Orchid Muse' author Erica Hannickel at the Kress

Erica Hannickel, PhD, author, self-described orchiholic, environmental history professor at Northland College in Ashland, and Master Gardener will delight with a presentation, “Of Empresses and Orchids”, about two 19th century empresses who loved orchids!  She'll tell the story of how several genera of orchids assisted Empress Cixi of China and Empress Eugenie of France in their rise to power in their respective countries, and how this led to the forcible “opening” of trade with China in 1860.
